What is Pregnancy Amendment Bill and who will benefit

About 1 year after it was passed in the Lok Sabha, the Pregnancy Amendment Bill 2010 was also passed in the Rajya Sabha on Tuesday. The Medical Termination of Pregnancy Amendment Bill 2020 was passed in the Lok Sabha on 17 March 2020. The Bill provides for amendment in the Medical Termination of Pregnancy Act 1971.
In general terms, this bill deals with abortion in case of pregnancy. The bill provides for standard timing of how long women can have abortions. The government has described the bill as providing dignity, autonomy and secrecy about women and stated that this is a major step in the interest of women.

What is the medical termination of pregnancy amendment bill?
The Medical Termination of Pregnancy Bill-2020 deals with abortion i.e. miscarriage in special circumstances during pregnancy. During the discussion on this bill in the lower house last year, the Union Health Minister said that abortion is allowed only for exceptional circumstances and due care has been taken in this bill.

The Medical Bill of Pregnancy Bill has a provision to increase the abortion limit to 24 weeks. Earlier, women may have miscarriages within a timeframe of up to 20 weeks after conception. According to the government, such a provision has been made that the proposed law should not be misused.

Why was this bill required?
According to Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan, this bill is the need of the hour for safe abortion of women. It was not safe to have an abortion at 20 weeks. Many women were also killed during this period. It would be relatively safe to have an abortion at 24 weeks. According to the provisions of this bill, the number of people who die during abortion will be reduced.
