Manoj Bajpayee said that while he was very happy about Chhichhore winning the National Award for Best Hindi Film earlier this week, he said that Sonchiraya would have been honored. Both films featured the late Sushant Singh Rajput.
Chhichor director Nitesh Tiwari and producer Sajid Nadiadwala dedicated the national award won by the film to Sushant. Other actors including Shraddha Kapoor and Varun Sharma remembered her in their social media posts.
In an interview with Bollywood Hungama, Manoj said that getting the national award for Chhichhore was like ‘poetic justice’. However, he may have liked Sonchiraiya, in which he also acted, as well as won a few.
When Chichhore won the award, I was very happy because our industry is box-office oriented. If the film earns 250–300 crores and it is not being celebrated enough, then you feel that there is something wrong. But when the same film wins the National Award, it seems that there has been poetic justice towards it. There is a poetic justice towards the film, in the end it is justice that he deserves. I loved it when Chichhore got the award, but at the same time I secretly hoped that Sonchiraya should have won something.
Manoj called Sonchiraiya ‘a classic and one of the best films of my career’. He said that when he does not want to see his own films, as they become important for his performance, this is a film that I lose myself in.
Every single frame and scene, Sushant Singh Rajput is great with Bhumi Pednekar in the film. Bhoomi has done such a great job in the film. I also told him that this film will always be above anything that other actresses of his generation have done.
Directed by Abhishek Chaubey, Sonchiraiya is a dacoit drama starring Sushant, Manoj and Bhumi along with Ranveer Shorey and Ashutosh Rana. While the film was critically acclaimed, it was not a commercial success.
Meanwhile, Manoj won the National Award for Best Actor for his performance in Bhosle. This is the third national award win of his career.
